Did you know that World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) is February 5, 2025? This year marks the 15th anniversary of WRAD. Here at the YWCA Northwestern Illinois our team is a huge advocate for reading aloud to children. With our collaboration with United Way of Rock River Valley, we are able to provide read alouds with our child care providers and the children they have in care. In addition, we host read aloud events at our organization for the community to enjoy (keep your eye out for an event scheduled in the Spring). We also enjoy collaborating with Tinker Swiss Cottage for monthly read alouds at the museum. Check out their website to register for the next read aloud session http://www.tinkercottage.com/

World Read Aloud Day is a day where people are encouraged to grab a book and read aloud to an audience, highlighting the power of sharing stories and advocating for literacy as a fundamental human right. The day aims to address global literacy disparities and ensure everyone has access to the benefits of reading.

If you are wondering how you can participate in this day, here are a few ideas. You can read aloud to children, family members, friends or even in community settings like schools, libraries, daycares, or local businesses.

Reading, whether it be out loud or to yourself has so many important benefits.  Some of the benefits and importance of reading aloud to children include:

  • Helps to develop their brains and set them up for success in life
  • Encourages them learn new words and develop a better understanding of language
  • Creates a bonding experience with children
  • Enhances critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Sparks creativity and imagination

As a working mom, I understand how challenging it can be to find time to read aloud to your children. Establishing a routine has been key for me. Bedtime often works best since it’s a predictable part of the day, and we make it a habit to read each night. I also keep a book in my car for moments when we’re waiting—whether it’s in line or in between activities—since reading is a great way to pass the time and keep us engaged. Another good opportunity is before a sporting event, when there’s often downtime. Even during doctor’s appointments, reading quietly or looking through books can make the wait more enjoyable.

Children often enjoy having a variety of books to choose from, and visiting the library is a wonderful way to explore countless options. Additionally, many neighborhoods have community libraries where you can borrow books or even donate your old ones, giving others the chance to read and enjoy them. If you’re visiting our main office, you’ll also find a bookshelf filled with new or gently used books donated by the United Way of Rock River Valley. We encourage you to take a moment to pick out a book your child might enjoy!

When children are young and learning to read, many enjoy the opportunity to read aloud. I know my kids were always so proud when they could read a sentence on their own and began recognizing words. Even if they didn’t fully know the words yet, learning to sound them out or using the pictures to tell a story helped them develop an understanding of reading. These small steps build their confidence and prepare them for the future—whether it’s presenting to their class or giving a speech someday.
